This young oak tree has been nurtured into life as part of a programme of regeneration in what was a dark, closed and sterile forestry plantation. It represents renewal and transformation in this very practical way but also, for me, in a deeply rich, metaphysical way. The autumn colours and uplifted branches, redolent of flames, stand out on the hillside as a beacon of hope in this special place (Moccas Hill Wood, Herefordshire).
Studio watercolour based on outdoor sketches and photos. Thanks to George Widman for photographic assistance during the making of the painting.
